What if getting to the airport didn’t mean driving an hour or two to the airport?
Instead, you could head to a small airfield closer to home, board a nine-passenger plane and fly straight to a major airport to catch your international flight. Or skip the big airport altogether and fly directly to a beach town, mountain destination or nearby city.
It sounds futuristic, but the FAA just completed a series of real-world test flights designed to see whether something very close to this could actually work.
On August 18, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that Electra, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the New Jersey Department of Transportation had completed hybrid-electric demonstration flights connecting smaller airports with Philadelphia International Airport.
The flights traveled between Manassas, Virginia, and Philadelphia, with stops at Millville Executive Airport, Atlantic City’s Bader Field and Northeast Philadelphia Airport before connecting with Philadelphia International Airport.
And this wasn’t simply a test to prove that the airplane could fly.
The bigger experiment was testing an entirely different way of using airplanes.
The bright yellow airplane in the video is Electra’s two-seat EL2 Goldfinch.
It’s a technology demonstrator, not the passenger aircraft you would eventually book.
But Electra has been flying it in increasingly realistic environments to prove that its ultra-short takeoff concept works outside a traditional airport runway.
The idea is basically Uber—but for short regional flights
Electra calls its concept “Direct Aviation.”
The easiest way to understand it is to forget how we normally think about airports.
Right now, flying usually means getting yourself to a major airport, navigating a huge terminal and boarding an aircraft that needs a long runway.
Electra wants to bring the airplane much closer to you.
Its planned nine-passenger EL9 is designed to take off and land in about 150 feet—roughly the length of half a football field.
That means it could potentially operate from thousands of places traditional passenger planes can’t use, including small community airports, existing heliports and specially approved “Ultra Short Access Points” near cities and destinations.
The aircraft doesn’t take off vertically like the futuristic air taxis we’ve been hearing about for years. It still rolls along the ground like a normal airplane.
It just doesn’t need much ground.
Electra accomplishes that using something called “blown lift.” Eight electric motors power propellers positioned along the wing, pushing air over it and creating extra lift even when the airplane is moving relatively slowly.
For travelers, the engineering isn’t really the exciting part.
The exciting part is where the airplane could take you.
Electra has already landed one of these planes in downtown Charleston
The Philadelphia-area flights aren’t Electra’s first attempt at bringing an airplane somewhere airplanes don’t normally go.
Earlier this year, Electra flew its EL2 into downtown Charleston, South Carolina, landing at the Union Pier waterfront.
That demonstration was specifically designed to show how ultra-short aircraft could potentially operate close to urban centers instead of requiring travelers to make the trip out to a traditional airport.
Electra has also tested the aircraft from a 300-foot drone runway, a closed access road and a grass field at Virginia Tech.
Those aren’t proposals on a PowerPoint anymore. The little yellow airplane has actually been taking off and landing from them.
The question now is whether that ability can be turned into a safe, practical passenger transportation system.
This could be especially useful for the trips we hate driving
Electra isn’t really trying to replace your flight from Los Angeles to Paris.
The sweet spot is much shorter.
Think about all the trips where you look at Google Maps and think, Four hours? I guess we’re driving.
Flying commercially often doesn’t make sense because getting to the airport, parking, going through security and making connections takes almost as long as the drive.
Electra is targeting exactly that gap.
The company has previously highlighted regional trips in roughly the 50- to 300-nautical-mile range, where traditional airline service can be inconvenient but driving can eat up half a day.
Imagine flying directly to a ski town instead of renting a car and driving another three hours from the nearest major airport.
Or flying from a suburban airfield to a beach destination.
Or—and this may be the most immediately useful version—taking a short flight from your hometown to a major airport instead of driving there.
The FAA’s August demonstration specifically tested that last scenario.
It could also change how connecting flights work
Today, smaller communities often rely on regional airlines to connect them with major hubs. But scheduled airline service only makes financial sense when there are enough passengers to fill larger aircraft.
A nine-seat aircraft changes that equation.
Electra has specifically identified airport feeder service as one potential use for the EL9.
Instead of driving 90 minutes to Philadelphia International, for example, a traveler might eventually depart from a much smaller airport closer to home and connect at PHL.
Electra has even proposed the idea of remote terminals where passengers could potentially park and complete parts of the airport process before flying into the larger hub.
Exactly how security, baggage transfers and airline connections would work hasn’t been finalized, and those details could ultimately determine whether this becomes genuinely convenient or just another transportation novelty.
But the FAA is now testing the concept in the real world.
And it should be much quieter than the small planes you’re used to
Noise is one of the biggest problems with putting aircraft closer to where people actually live.
That’s another reason hybrid-electric propulsion matters.
Electra says previous testing of its EL2 measured about 55 decibels from 500 feet, roughly comparable to the sound level of a normal conversation.
The aircraft can also operate in a quieter battery-electric mode during portions of a flight while using its hybrid system to provide the range needed for longer trips.
That combination gives it an advantage over an all-electric aircraft: it doesn’t have to depend entirely on giant batteries or charging infrastructure at every tiny destination.
So is this actually going to happen?
Maybe—and there’s considerably more happening behind the scenes than one experimental airplane would suggest.
Electra says it has accumulated more than 2,200 provisional orders from over 60 operators worldwide for its planned EL9, representing a reported backlog of about $13 billion.
But those aren’t 2,200 passenger airplanes flying around today.
The EL9 is still being developed, and the company currently expects the nine-passenger aircraft to enter commercial service in 2029.
That means certification, airline operations, infrastructure, local approvals and a long list of practical details still have to fall into place before you’ll be opening an app and booking one.
The FAA’s involvement is important precisely because of those unanswered questions.
Its eVTOL Integration Pilot Program isn’t just evaluating aircraft. The government is using real-world demonstrations to figure out what needs to change in airport procedures, air traffic operations and regulations before advanced aircraft can be integrated into everyday transportation.
And the August flights aren’t the end of the experiment.
The FAA says Pennsylvania and other participants are planning additional demonstration flights throughout the rest of 2026.
The next tests could get even more interesting
Electra’s participation in the federal program extends beyond Pennsylvania.
Earlier this year, the company outlined proposed demonstrations involving Florida as well as the New York/New Jersey region.
One proposed concept would examine connections between New Jersey and New York City using existing aviation infrastructure. Another Florida project is looking at how ultra-short aircraft could connect dense urban areas with regional destinations.
In other words, the Philadelphia flights aren’t supposed to be a one-off publicity stunt.
They’re part of a much larger attempt to answer a question travelers have probably never thought to ask:
What if we didn’t need a traditional airport everywhere we wanted to fly?
There are plenty of reasons this could still be difficult. Nine seats isn’t many. Ticket prices will matter enormously. Weather matters more with small aircraft. Communities will have opinions about airplanes operating closer to homes and businesses. And the FAA still has to certify the production aircraft and approve the systems surrounding it.
But Electra has now moved beyond renderings of a futuristic airplane.
The prototype has flown from grass fields, unusually short paved surfaces, an urban waterfront site and conventional airports. And now federal and state transportation agencies are testing how those capabilities might fit into the transportation network travelers already use.
For anyone who has ever spent longer driving to the airport than actually flying to their destination, that’s a future worth watching.
Because the biggest improvement to air travel may not be a better airport.
It might be needing the airport a whole lot less.
